Town Lagoon flooding

The Nhulunbuy Town Lagoon is currently experiencing high water levels as a result of heavy rainfall in the last weeks. With the Tropical Low closing in on the Gove Peninsula, additional rainfall is expected in the coming weekend and over the course of the next week. It can be expected that the water level in the Town Lagoon will continue to rise as a result.

For this reason, the decision has been made to temporarily close the Town Lagoon until water levels recede. This decision was made as a matter of community safety. Significant sections of the Walking Trail are now underwater. As a result, there is an increased risk of encountering snakes and crocodiles in areas of the track which have not become flooded.

Once the water levels recede, the Nhulunbuy Corporation will be able to conduct maintenance and vegetation trimming operations, followed by re-opening of the Walking Trail.
