Pumping station damage

The Infrastructure department wishes to remind residents to ensure food scraps, clothing and chemicals are not disposed into toilets or sinks in your property.

Nhulunbuy's sewerage network utilises a series of pumps to move wastewater from your home into our sewer ponds. These pumps are designed for the purpose they are used for, but can be severely damaged if obstructed by foreign objects. Disposal of general waste through toilets and sinks causes items to enter the sewerage network. When this occurs, blockages can be formed in our pipes. A potential consequence of this is the re-entry of raw sewage back towards your sinks and toilet, and into your home.

Please note that the following items should never be disposed of into our sewerage network:

  • Clothing
  • Cooking waste, including bones, fat and oils
  • Tea leaves and coffee grinds
  • Hazardous chemicals, fuel or motor oils

The Waste Management Facility located a short drive from Nhulunbuy takes residential waste free of charge (excluding whitegoods and car tyres).
