Seaplane at Gove Airport - 9/5/24

The Airport team of the Nhulunbuy Corporation were very pleased welcome Cathy Babis and David Geers on the afternoon of the 9th of May, who are on their way around Australia in a seaplane, in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the RAAF's very first circumnavigation of Australia in a seaplane. This journey, in April 1924, took place just 21 years after the very first flight undertaken, pushing the boundaries of what was believed possible in aviation. Enthusiasts nationwide celebrated the centenary of this event on April the 6th 2024.

However, Australian Seaplane Adventures chose to take it one step further, by having a number of their crews flying either counter-clockwise or clockwise around a loop of the continent. Pushing the barrier even further, Cathy Babis will be the very first female pilot to complete this extraordinary undertaking. Cathy is very interested in fostering diversity in the aviation industry and getting women and girls into the flying.
