Sewerage
Everything we pour down the drain or flush down the toilet goes through our sewerage systems.
It is crucial to remember that sewerage system is designed to transport ONLY certain materials and when foreign items appear, they can build up and cause unsought blockages.
Disposing of Unwanted Items
There are products from all areas of our homes that need to stay out of our drains. Below are couple of ways to dispose of some of the most common items that can cause blockages in sewer pipes:
Put it in a General Waste Bin:
- Baby Wipes (wet wipes, sanitary wipes)
- Condoms
- Nappies
- Sanitary items (tampons, pads)
- Cotton buds and cotton balls
- Hair (human and animal)
- Paper towels
- Household fats, oils and grease
Put it in a Compost bin:
- Coffee grounds
- Vegetable scraps
- Paper Towels
- Tea bags
Blockages
It is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain and repair all sewerage pipes and fittings in a property, up to and including the point of connection with Nhulunbuy Corporation’s sewer main.

Stormwater & Drains
Stormwater is the rainwater that runs off roofs, roads, footpaths and other surfaces. This water flows into a stormwater drain, then to stormwater gullies, which then flows out into the ocean.
Stormwater flows through your property's private drainage system to Rio Tinto's stormwater drainage system, which includes pipes, kerbs, culverts and stormwater gullies.
Nhulunbuy Corporation is responsible for the maintenance of Rio Tinto owned stormwater drainage. Property owners are responsible to construct and maintain stormwater drainage systems on their property. Please see the infographic below:
