The Northern Territory Government has a number of regulations on the ownership of spas and swimming pools. Owners of pools and spas which are deeper than 30cm must abide by them. These are listed below:
- On properties of less than 1.8 hectares, a pool or spa must have a pool safety barrier that meets the Modified Australian Standard, as described on this webpage: https://www.spasa.com.au/pool-and-spa-owners/faqs-tips-and-tricks/pool-…;
- Pool and spa owners are required to hold a compliance certificate. In Nhulunbuy, this is can be issued by the Nhulunbuy Corporation.
- Pool and spa owners are required to follow all conditions listed on the compliance certificate. This will include (but is not limited to) keeping gates closed, having correct fencing, adhering to correct barrier requirements (including making sure no climbable objects are within 1.2m of the fence exterior and 30cm of the fence interior) and ensuring all doors/gates are functional and in working condition at all times.
Royal Lifesaving Australia recommends that children should be within arms length of a responsible adult around water. Additionally, pools/spas should be drained when not in use and stored out of reach of children in a place where it cannot collect rain water.
