The Animal Control By-laws require that all dogs residing in Nhulunbuy and the Industrial Estate over the age of three months must be registered with the Nhulunbuy Corporation. Registrations must done in the name of a person over 18 years of age. All dog registrations are due on 1st of January of each year.
The permanent identification (microchipping) and registration scheme greatly assists authorities in return lost and injured animals to their owners. Once microchipped and registered, your dog is protected for life.
How do I register my pet?
Step 1 – Permanent identification through microchipping
The microchipping procedure is no more painful than a vaccination and is carried out the same way. A tiny capsule the size of a grain of rice is injected under the skin on the back of the dog’s neck. East Arnhem Veterinary Services, Nhulunbuy PAWS and the Nhulunbuy Corporation each have scanners that read the digital number on the chip inside the capsule. Microchipping can be arranged through East Arnhem Veterinary Services.
Step 2 – Registration with the Nhulunbuy Corporation
All new dog registrations and renewals must be submitted to the Nhulunbuy Corporation. The registration form for a new dog registration can be found here and can be submitted to the Nhulunbuy Corporation via either email or in person at our office . You can also come to the Nhulunbuy Corporation office on Westal Street to pick up a hard copy.
When you register your dog
You will need:
- Proof of de-sexing from your vet or a statutory declaration
- Any documents which entitle you to a discount (ie. concession card)
- The completed Application for Dog Registration form
