Lithium batteries
Lithium battery fire

As a reminder to all residents of East Arnhem Land, the Nhulunbuy Waste Management Facility takes e-Waste, including lithium and lithium-ion batteries. However, this must be declared to Gumatj Aboriginal Corporation staff when you enter the facility. Under no circumstances can these batteries of e-Waste be disposed of into landfill. If damaged or punctured, lithium and lithium-ion batteries (and e-Waste containing them) can detonate or catch fire. This kind of incident would be environmentally devastating for the region.

Similarly, lithium/lithium-ion batteries and associated e-Waste cannot be thrown into your ordinary waste bins.

This type of waste must be segregated from other waste. Gumatj AC staff take the waste, keeping it separate from other waste and is then disposed of.
