The Corporation

The Nhulunbuy Corporation Ltd was established under the Mining (Gove Peninsula Nabalco Agreement) Ordinance of 1968, and is a not for profit company which receives its authority from a service agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan Gove.

The Corporation is a public company limited by guarantee that manages the township of Nhulunbuy, Industrial Estate lease and the Gove Airport in a similar manner to that of a municipal body in any other towns of comparable size. The Corporation employs its own staff and is managed by the Town Administrator.

The Corporation’s principal continuing activities consists of the provision of municipal services to the town residents including the operation and management of:

  • Road construction and maintenance including footpaths, walkway lighting, traffic control and parking
  • Water reticulation
  • Sewerage treatment and reticulation
  • Waste Management Facility, garbage collection, garden waste collection and street cleaning
  • Stormwater drainage
  • Vector (Mosquito) control and weed control
  • Town planning and land development including building control
  • Parks and gardens
  • Sport and recreation facilities including sports ovals and town swimming pool
  • Television services of Seven Central
  • Regulatory services including animal control
  • Community services
  • Gove Airport
  • Fire Service (50% funded by the NT Govt)
  • Cemetery
  • Depot and Administration
  • Disaster Management

Achievements of the Corporation in recent years have been the Town Pool shade sails, Cantrell Skate Park, entertainment stage and canteen at ovals, footpath with lighting, Nhulunbuy Special Care Centre building project, and Town centre car park, installation of CCTV system and new Gove Airport terminal and runways.

Current major projects include environmentally sustainable Waste Management Facility, Nhulunbuy Town Pool upgrade, Airport lighting and ongoing road re-sealing.

The Corporation operates with a staff of 20 when similar councils across Australia have between 25 and 30 which is a testimony to their dedication. In a town where staff turnover is extremely high, the Corporation is averaging an enviable nine year average term of employment.
